Welcome to The Best Shows This Week! Now, usually in this dynamic feature, we just go through each day of the week (we start with Monday! not Sunday! ALT!) and chit-chat with you about the best shows happening that night. Of course, even if you’re new to this dynamic feature, you’ve probably already figured this out... seeing as how this dynamic feature is called, “The Best Shows This Week.”

But moving on, we’re not going to do it that way this time. Why? Because this week is CMJ, dear Rockness reader! And if I were to tell you all the good shows happening every night, I would have no life and would assume you didn’t have one either. Neither of us want to sit as long as that would require. There are hundreds of good shows happening every night. That’s the way it works.

So here’s how it’s gonna go down. I’m going to instead chit-chat with you about 10 bands you should really try and see during CMJ this week. As of this writing, I haven’t written it yet, but I expect big things out of myself.

But before I do that, I’m going to direct you to the list we made of the best official CMJ shows (that means you need a badge or some bucks, son!). Which is what I just did. With that hyperlink there. So this job’s done.

And after that (which again, is already done) I’m going to direct you to the list we made of the best FREE shows and parties happening this week. You know, the ones that are guarded at the door by an old man holding a magical staff and exclaiming, “YOU! SHALL! NOT!!! PAYYYYY!!!!” to everyone who happens to walk by (careful readers will see that joke wasn’t funny the first few dozen times). Anyway, see that hyperlink up there? Boom. This second job’s now done too.

But wait. Just realized I’m not quite ready to talk about the 10 bands you should really try and see during CMJ this week yet. Right now, I’m going to talk about the OH MY ROCKNESS OFFICIAL CMJ PARTY! I put it in ALL CAPS AND I hyperlinked it, man. That’s how important it is for us to get in some major chill time in together on Tuesday.

The 6 bands playing the party we made (all by ourselves!) are really loud and punk and we think they’re super great. These are the 6 bands you should really try to see during CMJ... and they are therefore excluded from my forthcoming list of 10 bands you should really try to see during CMJ... because we can’t make that list and just put in every band playing our own party... that would be lame.

So here’s how this party planning went down. I said, “Hunters, I really like you. And I wrote about you on my dynamic muzik blob. Do you want to play our CMJ show?” And they said YES! And then I asked PUP and Kirin J Callinan and Ovlov and Greys and Big Ups the same thing. And they all said YES!

The bands playing our party (not just for CMJ - we turn 9 years old this week too - which is totally true and totally insane) were picked because we really like them and we believe in their goodness and we’ve been writing nice things about them on our site for most of this year. We’re not just throwing our name on something for the sake of throwing our name on something. You know what I mean? Yeah. You know. Because you and I get each other.
