The Best Shows This Weekend!

This is a friendly reminder for those going down to Austin this week. SXSW badges are to be worn and visible at ALL times during the festival. Those who do not have their laminated badges properly displayed around their neck and on the outside of ALL apparel (yes, jackets too) will not be admitted to ANY official shows or ANY official parties or ANY official standing around wondering where we are and what it's all about.

You must also wear your SXSW badge at ALL TIMES when staying in official SXSW hotels. Badges will be required in order to enter your hotel bedroom. Badges will be required to enter your hotel bathroom. Badges will be required before you sit down to take a massive, burrito and beer fueled dumpppplease excuse me, dear Rockness Reader. Excuse me. I’m just tired. So so so tired.

It’s been a crazy week. We’ve been constantly listing hundreds of good shows for our SXSW site (how do you like that linkage? was it good?). Yeah. It’s fun. But sometimes we get so overwhelmed we just want to hang our head and cry cry cry. But, of course, we don’t. Because that would get our jammy bottoms alllll wet. We can’t have wet jammy wammy bottoms!

Anyway, because of the thing down in Austin, there’s not a TON of good shows here in NYC this week. But there are some. Yes, there are some. And it’s a good thing too. Because it only takes one.

These are the best shows this weekend.

Thursday - March 14th, 2013 A.D.

Atoms for Peace is doing a DJ set at (le) poisson rouge. The main dude in this band is such a creep. Thinks he’s so f&#*ing special. He’s really just some weirdo who doesn’t belong here oh! oh! sheeeeee’s runnning outttt the dooooor! she's running out! She run! Run! Run! Run! Runnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!

Fang Island plays Union Pool. Here’s the song that made my summer a lot happier last year. I hear its magic doubles during the last week of winter too. So play the song below whenever you’re ready for it to begin.

Friday - March 15th, 2013 A.D.

I think “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” is one of the greatest pop songs of the last 30 years. I bring this up because Starfucker is playing Webster Hall tonight and they did a cover of it a couple years ago. So let’s compare the two. Which do you like better? Reminder. Say you like neither and you are DEAD TO ME. (oh stop, you know my love will never quit you - it will just CUT YOU!)

(Sorry, Starfucker. But 2 out of 2 ain’t bad.)

Saturday - March 16th, 2013 A.D.

Coheed and Cambria are headlining Radio City Music Hall? Seriously? Huh. Anyway, this is a good song that I was into during the brief time I also happened to be into Rush. (An old co-worker was blasting this and I was like "Awesome! I didn't know you loved Rush too?!" And he was like, "It's Coheed and Cambria, dude." And I was like, "Cool! DON'T EVER CONTRADICT ME IN THE WORKPLACE AGAIN!!" And then we grabbed a coffee.) Yeah. I know this song is “old.” So what? So is the world. You think you’re better than the moon? Better than the stars? Huh, bub? “BYE BYEEEE BEAUTIFULLLLLL!”

Sunday - March 17th, 2013 A.D.

Pinback plays MHOW. Hope you settle in and get comfy for the long haul. Anything under three hours seems to be a “short” set for these guys. Guess it’s understandable. Rob Crow has only put out approximately 10,540 albums over the course of his career in approximately 19,532 bands. Must be hard to edit yourself.

So that's it. That's the rundown. That's the rub.

Hey, Austin. Thanks for taking most of the good shows this week. That was super kewl of you! Oh well. At least we always have EVERY OTHER WEEK OF THE YEAR. So we’re not sweating it either. (We’re freezing, actually. So cold. So so so cold. And tired)

See you next week.
