The Best Shows in NYC This Week

January 22, 2016

Written by Patrick McNamara

Welcome to this really great Internet article!

Recommended read if you like learning about good shows happening in NYC this week and/or you like The Internet and/or its websites.

Here we go!

Monday - January 25, 2016 A.D.

Tonight at Rough Trade you MIGHT have another chance to see Julien Baker (she played a couple days ago at Mercury Lounge, also with eskimeaux, and it was sold-out) and since she's good you should really consider going…. if you can get a ticket. I have no idea if this one is sold-out or not. I guess I could spend the time looking it up for you but no thanks. What I WILL do, however, is give you the opportunity to stream her SOLID debut album now. Oh, no worries! You're so welcome.

By the way, Rough Trade, at the same time as the Julien Baker show is also hosting a signing by Anthrax where if you buy their new record (I could look up what it's called ehh maybe later) and take it up to them they'll sign the shit out of it.

Julien Baker vs. Anthrax signing. YOU make the call.

Other notable Monday shows = Lazyeyes at (le) poisson rouge + Wyatt Cenac's “Night Train" at Littlefield

Chairlift play National Sawdust. This is the show you should go to tonight.

Other notable shows = as per our prior conversation exactly one line ago THIS is THE show you should go to tonight

There's a “Secret Show" at Baby's All Right tonight. It's being billed just like that. “Secret Show." Who do you think it is? Tell me on Twitter. The best ones get a RT and will probably be wrong and that's what makes it fun but seriously I have no idea who the secret band is at the secret show tonight also where's Fluffy?

Once again I tried to use the worst clip art possible how did I do? Thanks!

There's a FREE Neon Indian + Future Punx show at Music Hall of Williamsburg and it was all made possible thanks to some shoes or something. Two good bands. You don't pay. Pretty exciting stuff. However, don't get too high because if you didn't already RSVP it's too late to turn back time to when the list was still open (follow us on Twitter and I PROMISE to try and remember to remind you when stuff like RSVP lists open). But maybe you can still get in. I don't know. I'm sure there are ways. You'll figure it out. I believe in you.

Rising up-and-coming buzzy singer/songwriter Bruce Springsteen plays DIY co-op art space, Madison Square Garden. He hails from………. damn, where did I put that press release……. ah, there it is…. dang it, now I can't find my glasses…….. ah, there we are…….. New Jersey. Mr. Springsteen hails from New Jersey.

(Does this really great content sound familiar to any of you careful Rockness readers who delight in this digital article each week? No response? OK, cool. Just checking.)

Other notable Wednesday shows = DJ Big Boi at Output + Joan Baez 75th birthday bash at Beacon Theatre + Muse at Barclays

Thursday - January 28, 2016 A.D.

Good Room has a fundraiser rager tonight for Bernie Sanders featuring a bunch of peeps like Nancy Whang (The Juan Maclean/LCD Soundsystem), Sinkane and lots more. Go if you support Sanders or just want to DANCE.

If you prefer solidly melodic synth pop might I be so bold as to suggest you go see Wet either at Bowery Ballroom or tomorrow at Rough Trade? They recently toured with CHVRCHES if this helps you make the very best decision for you and your musical needs tonight.

Good Gainesville scuzz punks Soda play Alphaville (with Pill and friends). Please enjoy blasting this song from the band's brand new album on Dull Tools (co-run by a Parquet Court and a Future Punk) and if you like it (spoiler: you will) consider going to see them play it for you in the flesh. Keep it fresh.

Other notable Thursday shows = Skaters at Baby's All Right + Young Galaxy at (le) poisson rouge + Baked at Palisades + Walter Martin of The Walkmen at Union Pool

Pictureplane plays Trans-Pecos. Come! Let's dance! Also on this bill….. announcing (!) the triumphant return (!!) of DJ Dog Dick. That's DJ Dog Dick, ladies and gentlemen. DJ…. Dog….. Dick.

Surf Rock is Dead open for The High Highs at Union Pool. File Under: A Good Band. If you like jingle and/or jangle please consider streaming this dope song right…………….. NOW.

Other notable Friday shows = Flying Lotus at Music Hall of Williamsburg + St. Lucia at Baby's All Right + Mothers at Palisades + Kal Marks at Aviv + Wet at Rough Trade + Man Forever at The Greene Space

Saturday - January 30, 2016 A.D.

If you like the punk rock…. there's a good one at Palisades tonight led by Flagland and Two Inch Astronaut and Cheap Dinosaurs and Infinity Girl and Stove and we're all winners here.

If you like the big time synth pop…. NYC's own St. Lucia plays Webster Hall (after playing Baby's the night before). They grow up so fast! Please enjoy this delightful song below. At first I thought the drummer was Chicago Bulls star, Pau Gasol. Crazy, I know, but for a second I thought maybe it was similar to John Stamos playing drums for The Beach Boys on “Kokomo" or something. But upon further research I discovered that it's not….. the drummer of St. Lucia is not Pau Gasol…. he's helluva ballplayer, though…. I'm talking about Pau Gasol here…. not the drummer... although I've never seen his skills on the hardwood maybe he's super good too…. at basketball, that is….. and drumming too…. thanks for listening.

Other notable Saturday shows = Chomp at Aviv + Givers at Bowery Ballroom + So So Glos at McCarren Hotel + Pool + Teen Commandments at Rough Trade

Sunday - January 31, 2016 A.D.

Maybe just stay in and stream something from your couch and enjoy making it through the month of January.

Baby steps, yo. Magnets, yo.

Other Sunday shows = if you must go out because you don't own a couch consider supporting 826NYC and go to their fundraiser at The Bell House with Chris Gethard and a bunch more solid comics it wouldn't be the wrong move by any means.
