The Best Shows This Weekend!

August 17, 2013

Written by Patrick McNamara

Our site has been pretty sporadic in terms of its workability lately. It loads. Then drops loads. Works. Dumps. And on and on it goes. I’m not going to blame our host for this, though. Because why should I tell our host its own faults when they surely already know them? Those servers gotta know they suck, son!

Anywho, it certainly can be a frustrating experience when one’s musik blob doesn’t work right. Sometimes I get so angry at that “500 Page Error” I want to do something crazy - like make homemade modeling clay just so I can PUNCH SOMETHING without suffering any REPERCUSSIONS of such misplaced ANGER other than now having a NICE BOWL that looks like MY FIST that will last FOREVER once it HARDENS after I PLACE IT IN THE OVEN and TORCH IT.

But hey, man. We do our best to remain in the chill - even when our passions are stirred by faulty technology. We’ll figure out these issues. We’re sure of it. And anyway, as our blob rises - it falls - it gets back up - and waits to fall once more. The circle of life, yo. And the seasons, they go ‘round and ‘round, the painted ponies, they go up and down. It’s the carousel of life, son!

These are The Best Shows This Weekend.

Thursday - August 22nd, 2013 A.D.

Put Your Sad Down: A Benefit for Benjamin Curtis of School of Seven Bells. The Bowery Hotel is the place to be tonight. Earlier this year Ben was diagnosed with T-Cell Lymphoma. Come out and help support his recovery while also seeing/listening to Paul Banks of Interpol + Albert Hammond Jr. of The Strokes + a lot more announced and (probably) surprise special guests. Oh yeah, the dude from That ‘70s Show is DJ’ing. The one who wasn’t in that one movie where he was Dennis Quaid’s much younger boss. Whatever that one was. That movie isn’t even worth the Google search.

Also a really good one at Death by Audio (whose name could very well turn out to be prophecy tonight if you don’t bring ear plugs). Yes. This one is going to be whatever the opposite of hushed is. A Place to Bury Strangers + Bleeding Rainbow + Potty Mouth + Shark? (that’s a courageous statement - not a question). This Potty Mouth song isn’t that loud, btw. I mean it’s not NOT loud. I mean, oh whatever, I just like it.

Low Fat Getting High play a FREE show (w/ RSVP) at 285 Kent with Red Fang and Doomriders (they also play Sunday at Death by Audio). They’re a new up-and-coming band I recently wrote about. That’s why I linked their name - so you can read more about them in that profile. Contrary to semi-popular opinion, those links don’t go to the band’s website (so bands, you can stop emailing us to ask if we can add a link to your site - cuz that’s now where those links to - or keep asking - whatever - it’s really not that big of a deal). Anyway, I like guitars. And I like Low Fat Getting High.

Black Kids play Mercury Lounge (and Saturday at Glasslands). Remember them? They used to be really buzzy. Now they’re not as buzzy. Or something. Who cares. All that square talk leads to boxes and constrictions and holes made by pigeons. This is still a great pop song. They just ran into a few snags with the other songs. That’s all. It’s not like anyone gave them the chance to, god forbid, figure them out first. Huh, I never knew I felt so passionately Black Kids.

Ovlov + Two Inch Astronaut (that band also plays tomorrow at Cake Shop but I’ll talk about that show in a minute) lead a solid at Union Pool. I think I just posted an Ovlov song on here not too long ago (who knows - I have no real rear view mirror, guys) so I’ll go ahead and post a Two Inch Astronaut song now. Just in case you were curious about my internal thought process regarding this whole thing. Which isn’t really internal anymore. Since I keep typing. Anyway, two good guitar bands!

So that Cake Shop show that Two Inch Astronaut are playing. I’m ready to talk about it now. Because it’s happening tonight. And besides that good band, other good bands are playing too. What are the names of these good bands? I have no idea. JK! They’re Gross Relations + Bent Shapes + Butter the Children. Here’s a brand new Gross Relations song that we premiered on the site on Wednesday, August 21st (full disclosure: I wrote this thing before we premiered it so I hope we remember to do it - but I trust my future self won’t forget). Do you like this song? I like this song.

DJ Caribou and friends play the 2nd to last MoMA PS1 Warm-Up of the summer. That’s fairly depressing. Some say the days have already started getting shorter too....and we will continue embracing the darkness at a rapid pace...from now until late December...when we'll step out at 4:30pm for an afternoon coffee break and find ourselves surrounded by night. Thankfully, that nonsense is just liberal propaganda. Whew!

The two-day Afropunk Festival starts today. This year it’s at Commodore Barry Park in Fort Greene. Artists include Chuck D. + Theophilus London + Saul Williams + Mykki Blanco + LE1F + ?uest Love + the guy below who wrote the song I’ve listened to probably 200 times (literally) this summer (I’ll tell you about it later).

Yeah. So. The VMAs are at Barclays Center tonight. With Kanye. And Gaga. And a bunch of other shining musical stars. I guess. I don’t really know why I’m telling you this. This MTV thing reminds me of somebody, though. If you’re like me, you’ve been wondering what Jon from The Real World Season 2 has been up to lately (he was popular on this station the last time I actually watched the VMAs). Well good news! You can check out this hi-def dynamic clip below that enlightens us about the Jon BEHIND the Jon behind the Jon!

Joan of Arc play Shea Stadium tonight with CO LA + Bubbles and I can’t believe this song below is 16 years old. What the hell, Time? How you gonna do us like that? Well the joke’s on you anyway because you’re just a social construct. BUST!

Those were The Best Shows This Week and this has been fun. And our site only crashed 14 times since I started writing this. So hey, maybe things are looking up after all.

Now if you’ll excuse - I do believe the modelling clay is burning.

(UPDATE: our site is working better now. it rises...it falls...up...down...pink ponies...the seasons...'round and 'round...it's the carousel of life, son!
