The Best Shows This Weekend!

February 15, 2013

Weekends. People like them. I’m not totally sure why. But I think it’s because the majority of people don’t have to work on weekends...because work sucks...that’s why they call it “work.” But forget about that. Let’s talk about the good shows happening. And let’s save our problems for a day or two. Don’t worry. If you happen to forget your problems due to musical transcendence - Monday morning will most certainly remind you of them.

Friday, February 15th. 2013. A.D.

“And in my dreams you're alive and you're crying. As your mouth moves in mine, soft and sweet. Rings of flowers round your eyes and I love you. For the rest of your life (when you're ready).”

And that’s the best part of his best song. Jeff Mangum plays in Poughkeepsie tonight - a town where everyone spells complicated words like Poughkeepsie.

There’s a big time FREE show @ Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight. Vivian Girls + Widowspeak + Eternal Summers + Heliotropes. If you didn’t get a ticket - neither did Charlie the first time he tried. And look what happened to him? He ended up owning a goddamn chocolate factory.

Trying to think of who to recommend tonight. Oh. I Have It! I Have It! I Have It! Yo La Tengo! (That’s the proper translation - but since it’s a baseball reference - I think a case could equally be made for I Got It! I Got It! I Got It!

Soul Asylum are playing Bowery Ballroom. Now, look. You just wait one minute. Soul Asylum was a really good band. I'm talking about before all of that “Runaway Train” and beyond nonsense. Listen to this song below. Is it not good? It is GOOD. If you’re not listening to those guitars, you’re not listening right.

HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY, MIKE!!!!!!!

Uh-oh. Alex and his Freaks are back and playing Glasslands on Saturday night. You know what that means? Good. Music. Uh-oh.

Brian Chase of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (new album coming coming coming) plays Manhattan Inn. It’s going to be all drumming all the time. Or something. Here’s him talking about books or Star Wars or something. Why not?

So that’s the good show rundown from this end, friend. I hope it has helped you forget your problems already. Unless I just reminded you by saying that.

Damn. I always do that.
