20 Good Shows To See in NYC This Week

July 24 - July 30 / 2017 A.D.

1. Arcade Fire play a secret show somewhere in Brooklyn (Grand Prospect Hall) on Thursday, July 27th.

This is the big one. The Grand Poobah. The Greatest Not-So-Secret-Show Of All Time. Perhaps you've heard about it from 172 other music sources.

You've probably already put your name on the waitlist to see Arcade Fire play Brooklyn this week. Maybe by the time you read this you already know if you're getting in.

Hope they picked you. If not, well, we would've picked you.

By the way, is this still this band's song?

I haven't been keeping up since I returned my rented tux.

2. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers at Forest Hills Stadium on Wednesday, July 26th and Thursday, July 27th.

If you can prove your real name is Jerry Maguire you can get in free to both these two Tom Petty shows.

I just made that up.

Because what else can one say about Tom Petty that hasn't already been said?

Sometimes a hilarious white lie about a smash hit movie from 1996 that used one of his songs is just what the show promoter ordered!

And this feature is free............... it's free fallin'!

3. TR/ST at House of Yes on Wednesday, July 26th.

This TR/ST jam from 2012 A.D. (back when this Toronto band was billed as TRUST) still rules so hard.

It makes me feel evil is afoot.

Ideal beats for sxxxy dance parties too!

4. Sylvan Esso at Prospect Park Bandshell on Wednesday, July 26th.

This the #10 most popular upcoming NYC show on the blob.

Probably the best duo to come out of Durham, North Carolina since Crash Davis and Annie Savoy.

5. Ben Gibbard at Town Hall on Thursday, July 27th.

The Forbidden Love EP is my favorite Death Cab For Cutie album. Please feel free to disagree with my choice in the comments section this blob has never had.

"Cause we never turn out......the way we thought we would."

True that, Ben Gibbard.

True. That.

6. Moose Blood at Baby's All Right on Friday, July 28th.

This is my favorite Moose Blood jam probably.

(the recorded version is a little better than this live version but I couldn't find it to share with you so whattya gonna do)

But this Moose Blood jam called Bukowski* is pretty lit too.

* The Last Night of the Earth Poems is my favorite Charles Bukowski book probably

7. Andrew Bird at Prospect Park Bandshell on Friday, July 28th.

This is currently the #2 most popular upcoming NYC show on the blob.

This is also one of the biggest free shows of the entire summer.

Not bad for a kid from French Lick, Indiana.

Oh wait. That was Larry Bird.

I always get the former basketball star mixed up with this violin rocker star.

8. Panorama Fest at Randall's Island on Friday / Saturday / Sunday / July 28-30.

One of the biggest festivals in NYC this summer FOR SURE.

Nine Inch Nails * A Tribe Called Quest * Tame Impala * Future Islands * Frank Ocean * Belle & Sebastian * Justice * MGMT * Spoon * Cloud Nothings * Pinegrove * Mitski * Bleached * Foxygen * Girl Talk * Cherry Glazerr.

These are just some of the peeps playing this good thing on Randall's Island*. I just got tired of typing.

Check out the full Panorama Fest lineup (including those good Panorama Presents shows happening too).

* Randy seems like a super chill dude to always be letting folks use his island to put on dope shows

9. Priests at Brooklyn Night Bazaar on Saturday, July 29th.

Priests is a punk band from Washington D.C. They play protest anthems.

Since forming circa 2011 A.D. the staunchly independent band put out music under their own label ( Sister Polygon) and have played a TON of DIY shows w/ a bunch of dope bands like Screaming Females, Snail Mail, ESG, Pill, Shopping, Downtown Boys and The Julie Ruin to name a VERY few.

They do their own thing and their own thing rules.

10. Joe Pera at Union Hall on Thursday, July 27th / Friday, July 28th / Sunday, July 30th.

Joe Pera is a funny dude.

Kinda reminds me of my grandfather.

Rounding Out The Top 20:

Tame Impala at The Capitol Theatre

Okkervil River at Joe's Pub

Homeshake at Warsaw

The Rubinoos at Union Pool (free)

HEEMS at The Met Breuer

MC Lyte at Central Park Summerstage (free)

Liam Gallagher at Rough Trade (free)

Muse at Central Park Summerstage

Jerry Seinfeld at Beacon Theatre

Giorgio Moroder at Schmanski (free)
