Tapes 'n Tapes and Cold War Kids make it easy to be cool.

Two big buzz bands play two nights together at Bowery. Here's your chance to double your coolness points in one easy night when you check out Tapes 'n Tapes and Cold War Kids (sorry, Figurines&I'm sure you're cool too).
Minneapolis' Tapes 'n Tapes were the talk of SXSW 2006, and recently signed to the stellar label, XL. The foursome played like 114 times in Austin (I've told myself a million times not to exaggerate) to packed crowds eager to see how you could possibly incorporate the tuba into your heavy, angular synth pop. But somehow they blew that brass with spazzy sousaphone class.
They self-describe their sound as the illegitimate step-child of Frank Black and Stephen Malkmus, but they also very well might be Wire's grandkids (I sort of hear Violent Femmes too). Tapes 'n Tapes are the band you want to play at your party. Their songs are short and bouncy, and their style generally puts people in a good mood. Hmmm, sounds like another famous Minneapolis man... Kirby Puckett, we hardly knew ya.
Opening is California's Cold War Kids, a band that has seemingly come out of nowhere. I only heard the name for the first time a couple weeks ago, and now it seems they are on everyones radar. Buzz sure is a swift-moving beast. I guess they've tapped into something with their unique indie rock with a blues bent. CWK's music, like their other recent touring partners Two Gallants, has some serious soul power. Their swooning songs seek influence from the era of Dylan, Billie Holiday and the Velvet Underground. Their steady summer tour with Tapes 'N Tapes will further propel their popularity explosion. They've released 3 under-the-radar EPs, but with all the press they've been getting, it's almost assured that a proper full-length on a big label is coming soon.
