The Best Shows This Weekend!

March 4, 2013

“It’s March Madness, baby! It’s Madness! You can just feel the Madness and the magic in the building today, baby! The diaper dandies wanna dance today, baby! Cinderella got some awesome mice and some awesome birds to make her dress so she could go to to the Georgia Dome today, baby! All I do is talk about Duke, baby! As if no other school matters, baby! Duke and Coach K, baby! Because rooting for the frontrunners is my passion, baby!”

Welcome to March! It appears that every good band in the world has decided to play NYC this week on their way to SXSW. So while, yes, these best shows below are the best shows, they’re not all of the best shows. You know? Yeah. You know. It’s going to be a really good week. How do you like them apples, February? And by the way, I’m not just a janitor. I’m also a mathematical genius. So I'm not sweating it either.

Anytime The Thermals play, you should just go. Stop hemming and hawing about how you already saw them ten years ago. Just go. They’re always good. Here’s a song so good they named a record label after it.

Rustie is doing his dance thing at Output with Shlohmo and some other big time thumpers. And how about this! Rustie and his mix below is 95% responsible for the creation of that delightful meme, Harlem Shake! (Bauuer would probably fight me on that percentage - so it’s a good thing there’s a 99.9% chance Bauuer doesn’t read Rockness.) Oh, those crazy, crazy memes. The great thing about memes is that they have such a long shelf life and they hardly ever get old. Just delightful.

Great line-up at 285 Kent all around. Small Black. Heavenly Beat. Imperial Topaz. And DJ Beach Fossils. I shall like to attend this. Have you heard Small Black’s new song? Would you like to? Because I think you would. It’s great. (Eat yer heart out, Bono. And then replace whatever’s left behind with a giant plastic lemon.)

Stars play MHOW (and again the next night). I admit being a total sucker for this old, sad and pretty happy song (eat yer heart out, Youth Lagoon ----- and what’s with all this eating yer heart out stuff all about anyway because I surely do not know).

Philadelphia’s Literature plays good guitar jingle jangle. They’ll do it for you at Muchmore’s with three other bands I like: Ski Lodge + The Hairs + The Teen Age. As mentioned previously, I enjoy when four good bands play in the same space because that means I don’t have to move. Because I am a lazy individual. And I embrace it.

A surprisingly quiet Saturday night for shows - other than the good bands already mentioned above who have second or third shows tonight (hint: it’s PAWS + Stars + The Thermals). Guess it’s the quiet before the SXSW storm. It better not storm when we’re all down there. That would suck. We Were Promised Sunshine.

Demetri Martin is doing his thing at Wellmont tonight, though.

Girls Names are good. They’re playing a Slumberland Records show at Cameo Gallery. It should be good. Also, you can listen to their new album in its entirety right down there. It’s...wait for it....good.
