The Best Shows This Week!

February 11, 2013
Let’s talk about the best shows this week. I’m assuming that’s what you want to talk about. After all, that’s sort of the foundation of our relationship. But I’m happy to talk with you about something else besides music, if you’d like. That might be nice, actually. Books? Would you want to talk about books? I like books. Read any good ones lately? Or, how about the motion pictures? I like seeing those pictures too. Sports? I’ve been really into the speed bag lately (it’s more like dancing than punching). How about you? What’s been capturing your physical fitness interest?

Well, ok. I can tell by your silence that I need to let you think about it some more. Can’t just rush into this off-topic thing, after all. So let’s just run through the shows real quick. And then we’ll circle back on this.

Monday - February 11th, 2013 A.D.

You’ll always be Reading to me, guys. Bleeding Rainbow plays Cake Shop (they also play the next night at Glasslands). I've liked these guys for a long time - relatively, of course. But then again, isn't all time always relative forever? Who cares! Here's a brand new video for Bleeding Rainbow's song, “Waking Dream.”

Hannibal Buress leads a funny line-up of funny people at funny Matchless who are funnily enough putting this funny show on for free. (RE: the video below - I didn’t cry in the movie “Up” either. But I did cry at the end of “The Money Pit” - a motion picture starring Splash’s Tom Hanks and Cheers’ Shelley Long.)

Wyatt Cenac plays Littlefield this night too. Makes sense. Mondays have always seemed to be a joke to me. “Oh, cool. I get to work five days in a row now! Well, it’s a good thing I’m doing what I’m passionate about - data entry and scheduling meetings to talk about scheduling meetings for things!”

Tuesday - February 12th, 2013 A.D.

More like WEAK night. You know what I’m saying? You know? Yeah. You know.

This is pretty funny though.

Oh. And I’ve always liked Nightlands - who are opening at Knitting Factory. Nightlands should be more popular. If we’re claiming that to be a measure of artistic merit, I guess.

Wednesday - February 13th, 2013 A.D.

Hayden is a trusted Canadian troubadour. He doesn’t play around these parts too much. Canadians can’t just leave their country whenever they want, don’t you know. I don’t think. Who knows what goes on behind that impenetrable Ice Curtain. But Hayden will be at Mercury Lounge on this night.

Sorry for all this talk about comedy. It’s not my fault. The music is quiet and the comedians are loud so I’m not sweating it either. Here’s a good comedy show happening at The Bell House - featuring Todd Barry and his friends (I don’t know if they’re friends - they probably all secretly resent each other’s successes).

Toro y Moi plays Webster Hall (and the next night at MHOW). Does that news make you feel just a little bit more radiant? And maybe a just little bit more funky? Good. That means his chill is working.

Thursday - February 14th, 2013 A.D.

Awww. Of course I’ll be yours! Oh wait. You didn’t ask me. THANKS FOR NOTHING AND ESPECIALLY THANKS FOR NOT GETTING ME THOSE CHOCOLATE COVERED CHERRIES YOU KNOW I LOVE.

If you like to go to shows on Valentine’s Night - you’re in luck....or in love? Either way. You have some good choices.

Shea Stadium has a solid one led by two up-and-comers we’ve talked together about before - Infinity Shred + Big Ups.

Teengirl Fantasy plays (le) poisson rouge - trip out to this in the name of love.

Lemonade lead a good line-up at Cameo. I like their beats and things. They go boom.

Weekend Roundup (because I guess we’re cowboys now?)

Jeff Mangum! Free Vivian Girls/Widowspeak/Eternal Summers! Ex Cops! Javelin! Yo La Tengo! Lots more! But I'm just going to end it there! I'm just getting a little overwhelmed! With all the links!

Anyway, glad that’s over with. So...now that you’ve had some time to think. What else would like to talk out? Pets? Personal finance? The U.S. Postal Service? The city public school system?

We’re game for whatever. This is your show.
