Destroyer's sparse songs

March 22, 2006
Destroyer, a.k.a Dan Bejar (an occasional New Pornographers member), write cryptic pop songs with a unique vocal styling similar to early David Bowie. Always pushing the envelope with every album (and seemingly using a different backing band with every tour), Bejar has a serious need to experiment. Whether he's into writing minimally sparse acoustic songs, working on Roland synths and MIDI guitars, or incorporating the string swing of chamber pop, Bejar is always one step ahead of pop's curve. While his sound may be constantly in flux, his tone is not. These have always been distinct, theatrical songs shrouded (like Bejar himself) in a weird kind of musical mystery. And there's nothing false about it.

Destroyer plays Avalon, Tuesday, March 28th
