Widowspeak get their Brooklyn on (I have no idea what that title means...just wanted to write it.)

August 8, 2011
Widowspeak is a distinct point in the hairline in the center of the forehead. Oh wait. Oops. I went to the wrong website to do my research. Widowspeak is actually a very fine slo-mo trio from Brooklyn.

People say they sound like Mazzy Star (mostly due to the vocal similarities between Widowspeak singer/guitarist Molly Hamilton and Hope Sandoval). Sure, we hear Mazzy Star. But there's also a little bit of the summery beach swirl propelling these slow going, sunny, chill out jams too (also made by guitarist Rob Thomas and drummer Michael Stasiak). It's all very nice and breezy. You should get the band's 7" on Captured Tracks. It's good stuff.

Oh yeah, Widowspeak also does a cover of Chris Isaak's Wicked Game. I'll be honest; I've always hated that song. His croon really got on my nerves. But I don't hate the song as much when Widowspeak plays it. And if that's not a ringing endorsement, I don’t know what is! But seriously, these guys are mad "dec" (we think that's short for December, but not totally sure). I like them.

Widowspeak play Bowery Ballroom (with Woods + Ducktails!) on Saturday, August 13th.
