Gang Gang Dance rock a bizarrely gorgeous groove.

January 11, 2010
NYC's Gang Gang Dance are a four-piece that make uncompromisingly creative (i.e. "out-there") sounds treading the fine line between composition and improvisation. Combining the stylistic elements of Asian, Middle Eastern, Ethiopian, hip-hop, rock, experimental and electronic music, Gang Gang Dance can be an invigorating, albeit dizzying, listen. This is music made by people who take risks. Conglomerations of sounds melt into frantic soundscapes created, in part, by scattered synths, disjointed shrieks and jumbled drum loops.

The band features members of a whole bunch of other bands including White Magic, Cranium, Neil Michael Haggerty, and Cass McCombs. They're pals and sometimes touring partners with the similarly deranged Black Dice and Animal Collective. Somehow, amongst the mess, Gang Gang Dance is able find rhythms you can actually groove to. They may take the long route (by way of insanity) to reach this groove, but they almost always get there. If you have the patience to wait for them, it will be a rewardingly unique listen.
