((Stars)) Band Profile and Upcoming New York City Concerts - Oh My Rockness

Stars play laid-back pop for people who don't like laid-back pop. This isn't the "chill" pop that translates to "boring." These are simple, very listenable songs that require no active participation from the listener to get the feel-good gist. We're talking music for fans of American Analog Set and Broken Social Scene.

Their songs, especially on their latest album Set Yourself on Fire, are instantly appealing and pull off the rare feat of actually making alternating male/female vocals work. Most of the time bands should pick a singer and stick with it (Arcade Fire?), but in Stars' case, when Amy Millan sings it's perfect for the song and when Torquil Cambell sings it's perfect for the song.

I'll admit that I really didn't want to like the new album after I saw the artwork, ("hey, let's take Explosions in the Sky's cover art, but just to make sure it's our own creation, we'll put a big arm in the middle. Yeah!") but everyone knows you really shouldn't judge a band by their questionable choice in cover art.
