((Mates of State)) Band Profile and Upcoming New York City Concerts - Oh My Rockness
Mates of State
I have to admit something. There's something about Mates of State that makes me want to vomit. It's not the music that makes me nauseous (they play perfectly executed sugar pop with undeniably catchy hooks). It's the fact that the two members, Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel, are not only band mates and harmony partners but also newlyweds. And they let everyone in the crowd know it with all the goofy smiles and intimate looks they give each other on stage. What is this, the Nick and Jessica show? I mean this is rock 'n' roll! There's no place for "marriage" in rock 'n' roll, right?
It would be one thing if my head and eardrums hurt after a Mates of State gig. You expect that when you see a show. But the only thing that hurts me after witnessing such sweet displays of love on stage are my teeth. All that love is giving me cavities, man. But maybe I'm just a hopeless unromantic. If you can handle the love, go see Mates of State. Because they do play some pretty good songs.
