Javelins: more dangerous than Jarts.

November 10, 2008
Formed in 2003, Detroit's Javelins are an enjoyable trio that features two Thunderbirds Are Now! members, Matt Rickle and Julian Wettlin. Together with another guy named Matt (Howard), these guys play melodic pop that doesn't have too much of that Thunderbirds spazz, but Javelins still manage to throw around a few angular guitar rock-outs in between bouncy choruses.

Rickle plays the drums AND sings (just like Karen Carpenter used to do!) so that's always a fun poly-rhythmic exercise to see in person. Besides the obvious TAN! comparisons, their own label (Suburban Sprawl) has said they sound like Built to Spill meets Stereolab meets My Bloody Valentine. So basically, that means they sound just like the best-of-the-best of three different sub-genres (rock, electro, shoegaze). Wow. I was just going to say they sounded like "a good group." Let me see if I can do better. Javelins sound like Television meets TV on the Radio meets Radiohead. Boom. You heard it here first.
