Basia Bulat buzzes by on the indie-soul train.

May 12, 2008
Ontario's Basia Bulat is an incredibly talented songstress who plays the guitar, the flute, the autoharp, the ukulele, the sax and probably a dozen other instruments. She'd give Sufjan a run for his money.

Her ragtime indie-folk with a good dose of soul has been compared to everyone from Feist to Joanna Newsom to the suddenly-huge-due-to-Juno Kimya Dawson. I think her voice sounds like Natalie Merchant. And maybe you've seen her crazy cool cover of The Strokes' "Someday" on YouTube?

Basia can count the members of Arcade Fire as friends and fans, which has definitely helped get her buzz train up and running. Live, she has a revolving cast of musicians to help with the swelling strings/keys orchestration that she could probably create all herself in the studio.

Bulat has recently played shows with Final Fantasy, Sondre Lerche and Loney, Dear, and her new album is out now on the mighty Rough Trade Records.
