Band We Like
J Mascis drums it up with Witch.
March 11, 2008
Vermont's Witch is J Mascis' new band. Mascis, of course, was in Dinosaur Jr (or should I say "is?" Just like Chavez, I can't figure their whole "reunion" thing out) and is about as legendary as an indie guy can get. Just ask Lou Barlow.
But Witch sees Mascis opting out of guitar/frontman duties this time and returning to his supposed first love, drumming. Two guys from the band Feathers also contribute their avant-strangeness skills to Witch. The band's sound is a hybrid of '70s classic rock and straight-up jam rock, complete with fuzzy distortion and extended guitar solos.
Actually, Witch is the perfect name for these guys. It definitely sounds, well, "witchy." I can definitely see this being a good rock out if you turned it up loud enough and were hanging out in the mountains building a funeral pyre or something.

Witch plays Glasslands, on Wednesday, March 19th.
