Band We Like

The warm-all-over folk sounds of Ola Podrida.

October 23, 2007
Brooklyn's Ola Podrida is the sublime project of singer/songwriter/guitarist David Wingo. If you saw the indie movie "George Washington" from a few years back, you'll be pleased to know that Wingo provided the score to that film (man, that movie ruled). Live, Ola Podrida is a five-piece, and one of those pieces just happens to be our longtime favorite musician, Andrew Kenny (of American Analog Set fame).

Ola Podrida creates richly textured folk-pop that just makes you feel. It either makes you feel like you don't have a care in the world, or it makes you feel like you're bearing the weight of the world on your shoulders. Hard to explain, but listen and you'll know what I mean. These are subtle songs gently plucked and carefully crooned in Wingo's laid-back tenor.

Check out their album on Plug Research (DNTEL, David Thomas Broughton). Think Owen meets My Morning Jacket meets the theme song to Midnight Cowboy.

Ola Podrida plays Mercury Lounge (with David Bazan), on Monday, October 29th, and Maxwell's (with Rogue Wave), on Friday, November 2nd.
