These are The Best Shows This Weekend.

Thursday - August 29th, 2013 A.D.

Ty Segall plays MHOW tonight. He hasn’t put out any good garage-rock records in quite awhile… except for “Sleeper” which was released last week… and “Twins” late last year… and “Slaughterhouse” a few months before that… and “Hair” (with White Fence) around the same time… and probably “Fuzz” which comes out this October. Except for all that… and like two dozen other credits to his name over the last few years… that I got weary of researching… on Wikipedia. (p.s. did you know Ty Segall really likes tacos too? it’s nice to know i’m not alone.) (by the way, Ty Segall is also playing Friday night at Bowery Ballroom because of course he is.)

The final FREE House of Vans show of the summer is tonight. After this. No more. Done. Sic Transit Gloria. The paths of glory lead but to the grave. So carpe diem and stand on your desk and captain your captain and then get off your desk and go see Les Savy Fav (that is one old ass band profile - yeeesh) + Delorean + Special Guest (please be Michael Jordan)(update: nope - it's Small Black).

(*speaking of Wikipedia - this line in their entry is the best: “Live shows are punctuated by the antics of frontman Harrington, including interacting with audience members and on-stage wardrobe changes. The rest of the band continues to play as if nothing out of the ordinary is happening.”)

(* “i don’t see nothin’ but this bass right here. i don’t see nothin’ at all.”)

Good 1-2-3 punch (please note: i don’t condone violence against these bands - it’s just a figure of blobspeech) at Shea Stadium tonight with Dusted (blown-out lo-fi wonderment by the guy from Holy Fuck) and The Ice Choir (8-bit Spandau Ballet by the guy from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart) and Lurve (fuzz pop from the guys behind the guys behind the guys).

If you like to dance, why don’t you ever ask me to? You think I like this red marshmallow punch THAT much? You think I put on this purple cardigan and am leaning against this white wall for my own amusement? Anyway, I forgive you. It’s Kitsune Club Night at Output tonight with Classixx + Digitalism + more big time thumper bumpers*. Dance. Dance. Dance. Just not with me. Apparently.

(*what i learned this week: in NYC, they are called speed “bumps” - while in Los Angeles, they are called speed “humps” - it’s the little differences, guys…. it’s the little differences)

Other good shows tonight include Bent Shapes and Shark? at Silent Barn + Light Asylum with Celebration at The Bowery Electric + Literature at Pianos. And probably some more. Go see whoever. It’s your journey, man.

Friday - August 30th, 2013 A.D.

The So So Glos and Diarrhea Planet play Mercury Lounge tonight (and Sunday at Shea Stadium). And let me tell you something about Diarrhea Planet. This is their world. The rest of us are just pooping uncontrollably in it.

Remember when I was telling you about that FREE Blouse show at Other Music on Friday? If you’re reading this on Saturday and you are feeling a thousand regrets for missing it - GOOD NEWS - you can see them at Glasslands tonight. BAD NEWS - you have to pay money this time. But BEST NEWS - the more you give, the more you get.

Yacht play MHOW. Maybe it’s just me but I’ve always found this band to be a little “arty” if that even makes any sense?????

Other good shows include shows I’ve already mentioned like Ty Segall at Bowery + Bambara with Dusted at Cake Shop. I’ll mention them again, though, just so you don’t think this Friday night is thin on the show goodness. It’s not. It’s more of a Best Shows This Week structural issue than anything.

Saturday - August 31st, 2013 A.D.

It’s Night #1 celebrating 5 years of Captured Tracks being an excellent record label at The Well tonight. (Night #2 is… wait for it…. tomorrow). DIIV + Mac DeMarco + The Soft Moon + MINKS + Chris Cohen + Heavenly Beat. That’s who’s playing. Tonight. I’m not just naming random good bands. Let’s talk about Night #2 tomorrow. It seems best that way - especially because of the previously noted structural problems with this dynamic web feature.

Really solid punk show at The Studio at Webster Hall tonight. Young Adults + Pile + Big Ups + Weird Womb + Flagland are all fine bands. But I can only post one song from one of these bands because PAGE LOAD TIME so we’ll blindly reach into this hat here and out the winner comes and it’s….wait….THIS guy isn’t playing...THIS guy wasn’t supposed to be in this hat! Weird...but oh well….you gotta do what you say you’re going to do….otherwise where’s the integrity, right?

It’s Night #2 of Electric Zoo on Randall’s Island tonight (I forgot to talk about Night #1)(and won’t talk about Night #3) and things are going to get sooooo crazzzzzzy wheeeeeee! Tiesto headlines tonight. Did you know Tiesto made $32 million from DJ’ing this year? Did you also know that many of Tiesto’s big time beats sound like an old lazy man farting? But the numbers don’t lie. I guess he knows something that I don’t.

Bringing it back down somewhere towards reality. It’s the last MoMA PS1 Warm-Up of the summer. Horrible news. At least it’s Liars leading us toward the impending days of darkness and decay. So at least there’s that. (*have you ever noticed that Liars sometimes sound a little “arty?”)(**Yacht would understand.)

Other good shows tonight include Shigeto and Beacon at Bowery + Pictureplane at Paper Box + Grooms at Death by Audio + Friends and Greatest Hits at Glasslands + look out now, even more goodness. In hindsight, I’m not sure why I wasted the space on Tiesto. I guess I figured that guy needed the press.

Sunday - September 1st, 2013 A.D.

I’m ready to talk Night #2 of the Captured Tracks 5 year bash at The Well now. Wild Nothing + Beach Fossils + Widowspeak + Blouse (mention #3 for these guys, for all those playing from home) + Soft Metals + Alex Calder. Again, not just throwing out random band names. These are the bands that are playing. Tonight. At The Well. For Captured Tracks. 5 year birthday. Night #2. Thanks. Thanks a lot. You guys have been great.

Other good shows tonight include Breaking Bad on AMC.

Those were the Best Shows This Week. And they’re SO good that (as of this writing) they haven’t even happened yet. Terrific. Just terrific.

Thanks for the company. Stay chill. Stay cool. Stay positive. Stay true, dear Rockness reader. Stay. True.
