The Best Shows This Weekend!

June 3, 2013

Written by Patrick McNamara

Are you ready to do this Best Shows This Week thing......again? Yeah, man. They just keep coming. And coming. And coming. You can’t stop the Best Shows This Week, you see. You can only hope to contain them.

That being said - the following Best Shows This Week are not really contained. At all. They go all over the place and pretty much have their way out there. These Best Shows can decide to dominate at any time with their artistic splendor and assassin's temperament. It’s not a matter IF these shows will beat us - it’s HOW. (let’s see ‘em try and drive left on us though)

Get ready, indie rock jocks.* Because. Here. We. Go. A. Gain.

(*no further sports references will made throughout the duration of this piece - i don’t think - i can’t remember - i wrote the following stuff before i wrote this stuff - and i never look back)

Thursday - June 6th, 2013 A.D.

Rob Delaney starts a string of shows at Caroline’s tonight that will leave your tummy all tied up in knots. Anyone know if that guy uses Twitter at all? Could change everything???

Ariel Pink plays Irving Plaza. He’s a hero to the weirdos. He’s a grinder to the strange. He’s a hoagie to the eerie. And he’ll always be the submarine of my soul. (man, i should’ve eaten something before i started writing this.)

Speaking of weirdos. B-52s play The Capitol Theatre. I’d like to dedicate this song to my Rockness partner. She’s a weirdo too.

Look out now. Summer’s heating up now. Tonight’s the start of the 3-day Governors Ball on Randall’s Island. (Please note the apostrophe placement when you text it to your friends. Multiple Governors. Only one Randall. Cool? Cool.) There are a lot of bands playing. I won’t tell you any of their names though. Because I’m not going to list them all out. And I also don’t want you to think if I only list some that means the bands I didn’t list aren’t worth listing. That may be true. Or, I may just be lazy. YOU make the call. (Click the link up there and all these problems go away.) I’ll tell you who’s NOT playing Randalls Island though. Steppenwolf. Been there. Done that. (that phrase was super funny in 1970 - TRUST ME)

Japandroids are playing the Governors Ball after party at Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight too. You know who doesn’t like Japandroids? Nobody. Except for my Grandma. Because she died before they were a band. Thanks for the condolences. NOT! (that phrase was super funny in oh forget it)

Fine. Let’s just make this whole night about Governors Ball. What do I care? Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs are ALSO playing an after party. This one at Webster Hall. Should be a party. But wait. If the after party is also a party - is it truly an after party after all? Tricky times call for tricky questions, guys.

Saturday - June 8th, 2013 A.D.

The cute one with the doe eyes who started looking like a walrus after he turned 64 plays Barclays Center tonight. Please enjoy this video featuring two geniuses.

Black Marble play 285 Kent tonight - along with some other fine bands (again, it’s the laziness thing - please don’t tell me my faults, for I already know them). I like Black Marble. And what I mean by that is that when my ears hear their sounds, it makes me feel good....on the inside, man. On the inside.

Crocodiles play Union Pool tonight. They also played that afterparty at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Japandroids last night. But I deliberately didn’t mention that fact then because I wanted to talk about Crocodiles now. It was all part of the grand design, guys. I definitely, definitely don’t just type words and see what happens with this thing. Definitely, definitely not.

You just want to chill tonight? Maybe couch it? Say nothing if you just want to chill tonight and couch it. Great!

BUT SEE ALL OF OUR SUNDAY SHOW PICKS IF YOU PREFER NOT TO COUCH IT. ALSO I ADMIRE YOUR STAMINA AND YOUR COURAGE.

Remember when we were at Monday and now we’re done? Remember that? That was awesome. As always, thanks for playing. Don’t hate the playa. Don’t hate the game either. Love ‘em both. The more you give - the more you get.
