The Best Shows This Weekend!

April 1, 2013
Written by Patrick McNamara

You’re back! I wasn’t sure if you were going to come back! I mean, I know we had a good time in this space last week. At least I think we did. We shared some laughs and overall seemed to really hit it off (we totally get the same things!)....but I didn’t want to be presumptuous and just ASSUME you’d want to spend more time together. Ass should never come before You and Me. Because Ass never brings the chill vibe. So thanks for coming back sans Ass, bb.

We have a lot of best shows to talk about this weekend. So we should get to that. Because you know how it is between us. Whew. When the two of us get going. Sometimes we can gab gab and gab some more about this and that and everything in between.

Ooh. I really like this one at Knitting Factory. Why? For one, Jaill rules. For two, Jaill rules. (what? if they have two “Ls” in their name I can say that rule twice too.) For third, two of our recent Bands We Like bros, Las Rosas and Wild Yaks, are playing too. For fourth, I will be there. And for fifth, I want to rage with you. For sixth, I wish to do so sensibly.

If you feel like dancing - you should dance! Those feelings of wishing to physically express unbridled joy don’t come around very often. So you have to take advantage of them when you can. There’s a party at Santos’ house hosted by Goldroom that’s great for dancing. Spread the word. (Please note: Goldroom’s electronic songs are jams and they are the kind of jams that go big time.)

And just missing the window of opportunity to tie in an Easter joke - Frightened Rabbit play Terminal 5. And I’ll tell you what, bub. I’ll listen to any dude in a Scottish accent sing about anything. He could be singing about how tootsie rolls are yummy or how he has trouble finding love because he only sees the negative things about himself in other people. I don’t know and I don’t care. I just know it sounds super cool. And that’s what’s most important to this celebrated art form. Who gives a crap about content? Words are useless. Letters are totally SO DUM.

“Movin’ on up!...to the lower east side!” Hot buzzy alt young up-and-comers Chelsea Light Moving play Bowery Ballroom. I hope all of this early success only (made possible by world wide music blob love and only world wide mucus blob love) doesn’t go to the young singer Thurston Moore’s impressionable head. (To be spoken like Drago in Rocky IV): “The music blobs made you. The music blobs break you.” (God, Drago was such a dick.)

Music Hall of Williamsburg is doing this thing called Weekend at Basquiat's. I don’t really get it. But I like Basquiat. And I like that this show looks weird. And I like that this video uses “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” from the wonderful 1987 rom-com film “Mannequin” starring a young, up-and-coming, alt, buzzy Andrew McCarthy. He falls in love with a mannequin, don't you know. Who is Samantha on "Sex and the City," don't you know.

“If he dies he dies.” WHAT KIND OF MONSTER EVEN SAYS SOMETHING LIKE THAT?!?!?! GOD!!!!!!

And all this aggro caps lock punctuation isn’t good for my mellow. So to help me chill out - I’m now going to listen to Heavenly Beat - who coincidentally are also playing tonight at Cameo Gallery. But I probably would’ve listened to them even if they weren’t playing. Maybe. I don't know. You know what? Let’s not play a game of “what ifs” here.

Another young man, this one named Leonard Cohen, is playing this place called Radio City Music Hall. Here is the first “cut” (music industry insider term) off his hot buzzy up-and-alt-ing debut album. The kids are really going crazy for it.

Hmmm. I don’t know. Oh yeah no big deal but how about a little band that’s totally no big deal they’re just a little band that no big deal saved rock ‘n roll AND Latin and they're the YEAH YEAH YEAHS!!!!!! $%$##&#*###*#!!!!*

(*“I must break you.” I mean.....IS HE MAN OR MACHINE?!?!?!?!!)

What do you think? Should I put the Green Day and Best Coast show at Barclays on here? Tell you what. I’ll leave that up to you. I’ll just leave a little white space under this, see? And if you think that show should go there - go for it. Put it there. If you don’t think that show should go there - use the space to doodle something pretty. Like birds or trees. Or better yet, birds in trees. I don’t think anyone has ever thought to doodle birds in trees before.

That’s it. That's all the news from the best shows of the week.

Thanks again for coming back to this space! I hope we have now cemented this as a regular thing. But if you’re still wary, I understand. I totally, totally understand. You don’t have to come back to The Best Shows of the Week every week if you don’t want to. It’s fine. I’ll just completely crumble if you don’t return. That’s all. But it’s no big deal. Because after a mourning period where all I do is wallow, I’ll eventually get up and wipe the cheetos dust from my cheeks and make myself right again. And I’ll come back even stronger than before. And you know what that means? That means I’m coming for you, Drago. You hear me?!?! DRAGOOOOOO!!!!!
