The Best Shows This Weekend!

March 25, 2013
Written by Patrick McNamara

We’re going to talk about the best shows this weekend. That’s right. The very best. We’re talking the cream of the crop on top of the icing decorating that deliciously precarious tower of chocolate cake (which will soon fall into the sea of My Mouth).

Yes. The term “best” as used here may sound subjective to some of the keener ears and by-the-book clockwatchers out there. But can such claims can’t be considered subjective if such claims come straight from the heart? No, dear Rockness reader. No. Now, if these claims of what’s “best” comes from an automated data feed - well, that's a different story. Forget about it. Run away. Because the robots will never understand us. You’re a person. I’m a person. We. Are. Not. Page. Views. So with heart let me tell you - the shows below are the ones that are right and courageous and true and fine.

(Theze keWl shOwz RAWK + RULEZ 2!!! U kno, kid?!?! U kno? U know kid yeah you knw KID! LOL HAHA OMFG SMHMROFLM ROFDOMLOSMHDO!)

Warm Soda were one of the best bands I saw at SXSW 2013. They were so nice I saw them twice (not sure if you've heard bands tend to do multiple shows down there not sure if you've heard). So how did Warm Soda warm my...wait for it...soda? (you were waiting for something else?) Great question! Do you like catchy power pop? Yes! Do you like guitar solos? Yes! Do you wish they still made 8-tracks so you could cruise around in your dirtbag muscle car and see what was going on down at the parking lot of the DQ? Yes! Me too. So here’s a band for you. For me. For us.

OK. So...get ready for this grouping. Vampire Weekend + Alan Alda (yeah, man - from M*A*S*H - this isn’t some band trying to be totally alt by naming their alt band "Alan Alda" although I would fully stand behind any alt band that did that) + Cyndi Lauper + David Cross @ John Jay College for the taping of a Canadian Broadcasting Company radio show. Cool. Got it. This one is all over the place. And it should be pretty fun. Here’s that new Vampire Weekend song for you. You know....I really like it. Huh. Who knew?

Tonight is also the start of the three-night Aputumpu Fest across six venues. Lots of good up-and-comers will delight you here and there. And here’s to delighting the nights away.

Big time band reunion alert! Sound the buzz and call forth the aging alt grungers! The Breeders play The Bell House. If you’re not into this show then what’s your Deal, dude? That’s not funny.

Here’s one of the most famous rock/pop bass lines of the past twenty years. No big Deal. (btw thank you Breeders for making the cannonball cool because that’s the only dive i would do - i always thought it was because i was a chicken - but now i realize i was just ahead of my time)

There is also a mighty fine line-up situation at Living Bread. (That's a deli. In East Williamsburg. "A.L" on Yelp tells us, "I order from here all the time and the food is always up to par." A.L. goes on to say that their smoothies are "soooooo good.") They do shows too. Wild Yaks is one of five solid bands playing there tonight. And this is a good song.

Speedy Ortiz plays Big Snow (and the next night at Ran Tea House). I’ve told you about this good band before. I’m sure of it.

Saturday - March 30th, 2013 A.D.

Container is playing with ITAL and others at 285 Kent. He’s a beat maker from Providence whose accessible musical misdirection goes all over the place. You can’t read about it. You can’t stream it.* You gotta just feel it. (*or you can just stream it)

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Sharon Van Etten play Beacon Theater. This is actually their third night playing together at Beacon. They did it Thursday and Friday too. I guess I should have mentioned that earlier in the post. Sic Transit Gloria.

Sunday - March 31st, 2013 A.D.

You can chill on this night too. If you want. I’m just saying. If you want to eat the whole bag of soft-baked cookies because the elves in the tree basically dared you to - you can, dear Rockness reader. You can.

SEE ALL OF OUR SUNDAY SHOW PICKS.

That’s it. That’s the best shows of the week rundown. That’s the rub. That’s the stuff that dreams are made of. That’s the work...of a world wide music blob.
