The Best Shows This Week!

February 25, 2013

This edition of Best Shows of the Week is for all you lovers out there. Watch me for the changes and try and keep up, alright?

Monday - February 25, 2013 A.D.

Monday night is comedy night. Because god knows we all need pleasant diversions and two-drink (minimum) escapism on Monday nights. It’s a long way to Friday, friends. Wyatt Cenac plays Littlefield. Hannibal Buress at Matchless. And Michael Ian Black is the guest of WNYC’s “Ask Me Another” show at The Bell House. WNYC is the best.

(Note to Self: Don’t forget this is the night Solange is playing Webster Hall. Remember to reserve table for four, post-show, 11pm, Buttermilk Channel, for us, the sister, the brother-in-law.)

The goodness that is Bob Mould starts two nights at Bowery Ballroom. Tonight with Bear in Heaven. They’re goodness too. So you should go. No? You have other plans, you say? Well, OK. If I can’t change your mind....then no one will.

The always useful Showpaper presents a good bill of noisy up-and-comers at 285 Kent. Let Chat Logs give you a taste of tonight’s guitar-driven dissemination of deliciousness.

Desaparecidos are at Webster Hall. Below is their best song. Sorry the video kinda sucks. Maybe I’ll leave an anonymous YouTube comment about it. “Lay down your technological illusions and live this life for once! Live this life with bright eyes!”

Majical Cloudz opens for Autre Ne Veut at Santos Party House. He’s good. I wonder if he knows about the typo in his band name, though? Should I tell him? I'd want somebody to tell me.

If I embedded a video for every good show tonight the load time on this page would exceed Sunday night’s Oscars telecast. So let’s just mention a couple. And then make sure to check out all our picks by clicking that link below (same could be said for Friday...and Saturday...and I love this town).

My prom was a most magical experience I can hardly remember. But I think I thought then that the best years of our lives were ahead of us. Haha! Try to recapture that feeling at Indie Pop Prom at 285 Kent. We don’t have to live the rest of our lives PWND and Dethroned. Not when we have guitar jingle jangle to keep the dreams alive.

Solid 1-2-3 at Bowery Ballroom with Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Foxygen and Wampire. Those three bands are solid. Good job, bookers and agents. Good job.

Friday - March 1st, 2013 A.D.

The Orwells are a fine new band made up of five teenagers. They play Santos Party House (with the mighty So So Glos). Watch the video below. Could you write songs this good when you were in high school? Man, maybe the best days of their lives really ARE ahead for these guys. WIN TICKETS TO THIS ONE!!

Everyone’s new favorite happily demented dirty troubadour, Mac DeMarco, plays MHOW. Grow out your rat tail and come in your Trans Am for this one. It’s gonna be finger pluckin’ good.

I know we’re not Oh My Jazzness - but if you didn’t think we were going to recommend the show at Brooklyn Bowl with the legendary guys below - you, friend, are up to nuts. (Also, jazz rules. Don’t let any wedding reception or hotel bar or ice sculpting party tell you differently. That shit ain’t jazz.)

Saturday - March 2nd, 2013 A.D.

This is probably the best night for shows this week. Just letting you know.

You should definitely consider this show at The Studio of Webster Hall. It’s two sloppy fun punk bands that are the perfect show pairing. Single Mothers. Big Ups. They both made our 13 Bands To See at SXSW 2013 feature. Get into them.

Oh My Rockness CMJ show alums, Cymbals Eat Guitars, always put on a solid show. Because they are a solid band. That’s kind of how solid works. Inside / out, guys. Inside / out. See them lead a (you guessed it) solid line-up at Shea Stadium.

Oh, some kid named Thurston Moore is playing with his new band (he’s also playing for free the next day at one of those rock ‘n roll record stores). Here’s a video they made about some dude named William Burroughs. I think he’s one of those young bolshevik “beats” that are running amuck these days. Kids today.

There are a few good shows tonight. But I don’t know. Maybe you’ll just want to chill out? You’re probably tired from all the shows you went to this week. I mean, if you did it right. But I’m betting you did. Because I believe in YOU.

Same thing next week, BBF. Thanks for playing along. Stay strong. Pursue happiness. And be excellent to each other.
