The Best Shows This Week!

February 18, 2013

Let’s start the week with giving a special shout-out to all the presidents out there. I’m not just talking about presidents of the country. Or the presidents of the banks and the clubs and the firms (although their ascent to the pinnacle of power is something truly remarkable and truly fleeting).

I’m talking about the Presidents of YOU Inc. You’ve shown great promise this fiscal year as President of YOU. You led YOU firmly, but fairly. And while we still need to talk about some of your questionable T & E expenditures (I fail to see why the company should reimburse you for a king sized Kit Kat), overall you did a wonderful job running YOU. Keep it going.

Now it’s time to talk about the best shows this week.

Monday - February 18th, 2013 A.D.

Let's be honest. Your couch is probably the best show in town tonight.

Tuesday - February 19th, 2013 A.D.

Fred Armisen is up to something at Bowery Ballroom. Let’s take a trip back in time. Before Portlandia. Before SNL. Before that one road trip movie that was like Tom Green’s “Road Trip” movie but wasn’t that one, and if only I had access to some technology that would help remind me what that terrible movie was called. And oh yeah, after Trenchmouth.

Tame Impala plays Terminal 5. I would never have bet that this would be the band that became the band this popular. Too bad for me. I would’ve used the money I made on that bet to double down on Michael Jordan coming back at 50 and scoring 40 at least once in a regular season game.

Jonathan Richman plays The Bell House tonight and tomorrow. I wonder if hippy Johnnie will be there. I tell ya, that guys is always stoned. He's never straight.

Wednesday - February 20th, 2013 A.D.

The Ecstatic Music Fest series continues tonight at Merkin Concert Hall. Deerhoof is playing. You either love them. Or you don’t. That's art. I think. Who knows? I'll tell you who. No one. That's the beauty. That's the mystery.

Don’t get cocky, it’s gonna get rocky! The free (ticket needed) Scion + A.V. Club Open Mic is tonight at Public Assembly - led by A$AP ROCKY. PaRappa the Rappa not scheduled to appear.

Solange plays Webster Hall. I always like reminding you about this song. Because it’s important to remember good things whenever possible.

Thursday - February 21st, 2013 A.D.

Two shows for XXYYXX (now that’s one ALT moniker) and Teen Daze at 285 Kent tonight. Also, before XXYYXX did anything - DD/MM/YYYY did everything.

You might be interested in the line-up at Carnegie Hall tonight because of Ariel Pink or Jim James from My Morning Jacket or another one of our alt band moniker making pioneers, tUnE-YaRds. And rightfully so. But let’s not forget about this guy right down below. He’s just a legendary composer whose music will probably be remembered forever. No big deal.

Black Francis plays Maxwell’s tonight. He used to be in some other band called the Pixies. Or, maybe that was Matt Pinfield. I always get the two confused.

The Weekend - Friday, Saturday, Sunday - and then it starts all over again

We’ll talk more about these in greater detail later this week (don’t get too excited). But here's some rapid fire linkage for you to some good bands out there this weekend. Com Truise! Beach Fossils! Mighty Mouse! Speedy Ortiz! Kurt Vile! The dude from....Northern Exposure? Lots more! Probably! You'll never know! Unless you click that link below!
