20 Good Shows To See in NYC This Week

March 6 - March 12 - 2017 A.D

1. Slingshot Dakota play Shea Stadium on Monday, March 6th (tickets).

Slingshot Dakota slings super solid indie pop synth goodness.

Going to this show at Shea will make you feel better on a Monday night.

2. Kronos Quartet at The Greene Space for Ecstatic Music Fest on Tuesday, March 7th (tickets).

The legendary San Francisco string quartet has been stirring up contemporary classical transcendence for over forty years.

They pretty much know what they're doing at this point.

This show at Kaufman Music Center is part of Ecstatic Music Festival.

3. Buke and Gase play Union Pool on Tuesday, March 7th (tickets).

Buke = baritone ukelele

Gase = guitar / bass

The Brooklyn duo celebrates ten years of being a good band w/ a March residency at Union Pool.

4. The Radio Dept. play Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday, March 8th (tickets) and Music Hall of Williamsburg on Thursday, March 9th.

The beloved Swedish indie popsters play their first NYC shows in six years!

Go if you like solid catchy melodies that will make you feel a bit better about the state of things because music is a magical thing.

Make sure to get there on time to see openers, Germans ----> a classic POP JAM

Please note: these shows are sold-out (sorry I didn't do it I just blob here) but where there's a will - there's a pay.

5. The Flaming Lips play Terminal 5 on Thursday, March 9th.

"He hasn't dropped them...forgot them...or anything.

It's just too heavy....for Superman....to lift."

This show is sold-out but some tickets are available here.

(some claim The Flaming Lips have released other albums since 1999's The Soft Bulletin where the above song lyric is from but I'm not buying it)

6. Foxing headlines Brooklyn Night Bazaar on Thursday, March 9th (tickets).

Dramatic St. Louis indie / emo / punk / alt / rock / popsters Foxing lead a solid lineup at Brooklyn Night Bazaar.

Other good bands playing this show I've said nice things about on this music blob = Yohuna & Snail Mail

Also, this is a good opportunity for you to finally check out BNB. It's a cool weirdo space. You'll see

7. Heat headlines Mercury Lounge on Thursday, March 9th (tickets).

Love this lineup.

Heat = good band (Montreal / Topshelf Records)

Mercury Girls = good band (Philly / c86)

Navy Gangs = good band (Brooklyn / Swag)

Come early. Stay late. Never be sad about anything ever again.

8
. Surf Rock is Dead headlines Silent Barn on Thursday, March 9th.

Another fine / delightful bill of solid up-and-comers.

Surf Rock is Dead is good (NYC Pop Gaze).

WOMPS is good (Scotland DIY Punk).

Thick is good (Brooklyn Blow-Out).

Go if you like good!

9
. Jose Gonzalez plays The Appel Room at Lincoln Center on Friday, March 10th.

Jose Gonzalez is the greatest Argentinian-Swedish indie folk singer of all time. You heard it here FOURTH.

This excellent music man participates in Lincoln Center's American Songbook series by playing his good songs.

For you!

10. Los Campesinos! play Warsaw on Friday, March 10th (tickets).

This super fun (please note the exclamation point in their name) indie pop band from Wales (born 2006 A.D.) play their first NYC show in three years.

Go if you want to feel good on March 10th.

(Read this profile I wrote ten years ago where I compared Los Campesinos! to The Unicorns and Art Brut and The Go! Team. LOL. Such simpler times.)

RIYL: Improved Moods

Rounding Out The Top Twenty:

11. Yucky Duster at Sunnyvale

12. A Deer A Horse at Shea Stadium

13. RIPS at Alphaville

15. Stuyedeyed at Sunnyvale

16. Landlady at Silent Barn

17. Dinowalrus at Mercury Lounge
