10 Good Shows To See in NYC This Week

January 23 - 29 2017 A.D.

1. There's a big time tribute to the music of Leonard Cohen on Tuesday, January 24th at Music Hall of Williamsburg w/ Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Will Sheff (Okkervil River), Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Group) and a bunch more solid peeps participating.

Go if you like Leonard Cohen. Don't go if you're a sick twisted ____. (tickets)

On a separate note -- someone should really think to cover that song “Hallelujah" sometime!

2. Japanese Breakfast headlines a free show at Union Pool on Tuesday, January 24th.

Did you see our Top Songs of 2016? Japanese Breakfast has a jam on there because this band rules.

You should go to this show. I mentioned it's free, right?

I'd pay to see this..... but I'm not going to..... because it's free.

3. The World Is A Beautiful Place & I'm No Longer Afraid To Die headline Brooklyn Night Bazaar on Thursday, January 26th (tickets) and that's funny because I included The World Is A Beautiful Place & I'm No Longer Afraid To Die in our Top 20 Songs of 2016 feature too. Hilarious! We were just talking about that great feature!

The World Is A Beautiful Place & I'm No Longer Afraid To Die rules and I want to sing The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die's praises a lot more on Twitter but I often find myself running out of characters for some reason.

4. Austra plays Warsaw on Thursday, January 26th (tickets) and you still might be able to enter to win free tickets to this dope show because that's how this blob do.

Winners are totally picked at random but I hope it's u, man.

P.S. Austra rules.

5. Hiccup play Alphaville on Thursday, January 26th.

This good new band plays short poppy poppy poppy punk songs that will improve your mood.

Chill Fact: members of Hiccup also destroy on Chris Gethard's TV show as the house band.

6. Italian songwriter/producer/legend Giorgio Moroder does some DJ action at Flash Factory on Friday, January 27th (tickets).

You know his work.

Please now enjoy listening to one of my least favorite pop songs of all time. I just can't stand it.

7. Show Me The Body headline Saint Vitus on Friday, January 27th (tickets) w/ Noname, Pictureplane, Eulogy and Slums.

Please note: this show is being billed as “The Loudest Show in New York" (by either Barnum or Bailey, can't remember who) so bring earplugs….or don't….whatevs...long term hearing loss can be chill too. NOT! (Happy 25th Birthday, Wayne's World!!!).

8. American Football play Terminal 5 on Saturday, January 28th (tickets).

"Let's just forget

Everything said...

....ed....

....ed...."

(that was supposed to be the echo)

BTW, this new American Football song ALSO made our Top Songs of 2016 feature.

God, that was such a great feature.

9. Mogwai play Town Hall on Sunday, January 29th (tickets).

The last time these Scottish post rock heroes / legends / saviors played NYC was in 2014 A.D. (three years before the Apocalypse) so like catching a comet you should try your very best to go to this show because who knows when you'll get another time to see Mogwai, a band you always meant to see, a band you were meant to see.

10. Joan of Arc play Mercury Lounge on Sunday, January 29th (tickets).

"You've got such a pretty voice but you gotta get so fucked up to sing!" <----- me, singing Joan of Arc jams in the shower

Come hang at this show show w/ me.

(Joan of Arc also opening that American Football show the night before -- I wonder how they got that gig -- JK! Brothers! No Yo Emo!)

Other notable NYC shows this week = Cigarettes After Sex at Music Hall of Williamsburg + Cate Le Bon at Bowery Ballroom + Priests at Brooklyn Night Bazaar + Lilys at Bowery Ballroom

Thanks for reading!

Have fun out there!
