The Best Shows in NYC This Weekend!

February 18, 2016

Written by Patrick McNamara

I'm going to talk about some good shows going on around town this end week and then I'm going to shut the ____ up and let you pick up the discussion and steer it wherever you want it to go, cool?

Let's begin another edition of this really great article.

Thursday - February 18, 2016 A.D.

It's Summer is Forever II at Terminal 5 with Best Coast (good band) + Wavves (good band) + Cherry Glazerr (good band). I don't really remember Summer is Forever I but since it's eternal I'm probably just still living it.

Eleanor Friedberger plays Bowery Ballroom. She's good. Now please pay attention to this bold statement I'm about to make and hold me to it. 2017 is the year Fiery Furnaces get back together. BET.*

*but let's not bet with money as I don't have any #DIY #BLOB

David Dondero + Lauren Denitzio from Worriers + someone being billed as "Clarice Starling" play "Gender is Over (If You Want It): 1 Year Birthday Benefit for Immigrant Defense Project" at Silent Barn. Also, "Clarice Starling" is Laura Jane Grace* from Against Me! but you didn't hear it from this blob.

*LJG also plays The Appel Room at Lincoln Center tomorrow night

Other notable shows = DJ Tycho at Output + Ra Ra Riot at Rough Trade (free entry w/ purchase) + Katie Ellen (ex-Chumped) at Tiger Lounge (free) + Jerry Seinfeld at Beacon Theater

Friday - February 19, 2016 A.D.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra (good band) and Lower Dens (good band) play Irving Plaza tonight (and tomorrow too). Hey, do you want to win two free tickets to this goodness? Enter here (before Thursday, February 18). Winners are picked 100% at random but personally just between you and me I really hope that winner is YOU.

Hall & Oates play Madison Square Garden.

You're a rich girl, and you've gone too far

'Cause you know it don't matter anyway

You can rely on the old man's money

You can rely on the old man's money

It's a bitch girl but it's gone too far

'Cause you know it don't matter anyway

Say money but it won't get you too far

Get you too far

Don't you know, don't you know

That it's wrong to take what is given you

So far gone, on your own

You can get along if you try to be strong

But you'll never be strong 'cause

You're a rich girl, and you've gone too far

'Cause you know it don't matter anyway

You can rely on the old man's money

You can rely on the old man's money

It's a bitch girl and it's gone too far

'Cause you know it don't matter anyway

Say money but it won't get you too far

Get you too far

High and dry, out of the rain

It's so easy to hurt others when you can't feel pain

And don't you know that a love can't grow

'Cause there's too much to give, 'cause you'd rather live

For the thrill of it all, oh

You're a rich girl, and you've gone too far

'Cause you know it don't matter anyway

You can rely on the old man's money

You can rely on the old man's money

It's a bitch girl and it's gone too far

'Cause you know it don't matter anyway

Say money but it won't get you too far

Say money but it won't get you too far

Say money but it won't get you too far

Get you too far

And you say

You can rely on the old man's money

You can rely on the old man's money

You're a rich girl, a rich girl

Oh, you're a rich, rich girl yeah

Say money but it won't get you too far

Oh, get ya too far

Philly indie emo punk popsters Little Big League (they're good) play Shea Stadium w/ OVLOV (reunion!) + Painted Zeros + Real Life Buildings. Speaking of Little Big League, I just profiled member Michelle Zauner's side-project band, Japanese Breakfast, and they're grrrrrreat!

Other notable shows = Danny Wood from New (!) Kids (!) on the Block(!) at Mercury Lounge* + Polica at Rough Trade + Bayonne at Baby's All Right + Buster Poindexter at City Winery + Rhett Miller at The Bell House

*my girlfriend in 6th Grade said she would dump me if Joey from New Kids asked her out so I never liked that guy but Danny posed no threat...to me or anybody

Chicago's* Disappears play Baby's All Right and this super dope band swirls and blasts with the goddamn best of them.

*Go White Sox. (pitchers and catchers have already reported to spring training CAN U BELIEVE IT)

Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Lower Dens play Irving Plaza again tonight. I know I already mentioned this but I'm using the opportunity to remind you that you can enter to free win tickets to this show (or Friday's). Again, it's totally random who wins. Again, I hope it's you.

It's "Where's The Band" emo night at The Bell House w/ members of Saves the Day, The Get Up Kids, Alkaline Trio, Hot Rod Circuit and Bayside leading the crowd in singalong songs with lyrics stolen straight from the pages of their 20+ year old diaries (or something like that anyway I didn't research this one too much I just blob here but I do love emo always and forever).

Other notable shows = Yusek at Good Room + The Goodbye Party and Radiator Hospital at Silent Barn + Kool Keith at The Grand Victory + The Men at Trans-Pecos + Rye Coalition at WFMU Monty Hall
