May 7, 2015

It's nice we keep doing this, you know?

Just wanted to mention that.

Let's talk about good shows now.

Thursday - May 7th, 2015 A.D.

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds play Webster Hall and this one has been sold-out for quite some time. So like always, I hope you either have a ticket or you don't care about Noel Gallagher.

*where I grew up in Illinois we called roadside rest areas "oases" and they weren't on the side of the road like most states they were ABOVE the road and now you know the coolest thing about where I grew up in Illinois

Speaking of Illinois, Chicago's Knuckle Puck (South Suburbs represent) play Best Buy Theater with some other bands but we don't really need to get into that for our purposes here. I just wanted to tell you that their emo punk pop song I posted below really pumps me up and makes me happy - particularly the part that starts at the 2:40 mark. So stick around for it.

Delicate Steve plays a FREE show at Moscot (a fancy eyewear store or something) at 7 PM tonight. Can you still feel the "Butterfly?" I can. Delicate Steve can put out a million more songs during his day but everything will always return to the "Butterfly."

And Slash plays Terminal 5. Um, uh-huh-huh.

Other notable shows = Beverly at Silent Barn + Holy Ghost! at Verboten (all vinyl DJ set - hallelujah!) + Saul Williams at Brooklyn Bowl + Glasser at (le) poisson rouge + Car Seat Headrest at Mercury Lounge + Alex Bleeker & the Freaks at Palisades + Those Darlins at Rough Trade + Greg Proops at The Bell House

Cloud Nothings and LVL UP play LaGuardia Place for NYU's annual Strawberry Festival. Now that's two really good bands right there. I'm fully convinced that the drummer in Cloud Nothings is one of the best drummers in the game today. And everytime I see LVL UP they shred my heart a little bit more - the good kind of ventricle tear. I'd pay for this one. But I'm not going to. It's FREE.

Sunflower Bean play The Studio at Webster Hall and they like Tame Impala enough to name a song after them. It's a pretty good song.

Virginia's Eternal Summers sling shimmering power rock at Cake Shop tonight for #CS10. If you don't know what that hashtag refers to please see Monday's portion of this dynamic article. If Monday isn't up there you must be reading The Best Shows This Weekend edition instead. So I'll just tell you again. Cake Shop turns 10 years old this month. #CS10. Explained.

Other notable shows = Natural Child at Baby's All Right + Sophie at BRIC House + HolyChild at Brooklyn Night Bazaar + Daniel Avery at Output + Bellows at Shea Stadium + Muse at Webster Hall

Saturday - May 9th, 2015 A.D

House of Vans just announced their free "Almost Summer" series and tonight's the first one at, you guessed it, House of Vans. Kathleen Hanna's The Julie Ruin headline. Bleached opens. Youth Code DJ's. As of this writing the RSVP is still open. But when are you reading this, that's the question. I might as well ask the wind.

Juan Wauters (of The Beets) plays solid lo-fi eccentro-pop at Shea Stadium. That guy's songs have a lot of heart and just might make you feel a bit better about things. Nude Beach also plays and doing a google image search for that band is always a trip.

Har Mar Superstar headlines the free show at Brooklyn Night Bazaar but the hand-sourced choccies and locally grown trinkets and artisanal tacos are gonna cost ya. Did you know "Lady, you shot me!" was Sam Cooke's last words? I tell you that every time. Also, Sam Cooke was the shit. Here is Har Mar Superstar performing "Lady, You Shot Me!"

Other notable shows = Pissed Jeans and Big Ups at Baby's All Right + Penguin Prison at Music Hall of Williamsburg + Zula at Palisades + The Minus 5 at WFMU Monty Hall

Sunday - May 10th, 2015 A.D.

Popster Fred Thomas plays new venue, Elvis Guesthouse, in Manhattan. I think I've heard of that borough before. Remember Fred from solid pop band Saturday Looks Good To Me? They're still around, I think. Anyway, tonight's as good as any night to check out EG (except maybe the night Bjork came in that would have been a better night to check out Elvis Guesthouse, probably).

Other notable shows = Game of Thrones + Silicon Valley + Last Week Tonight With John Oliver + Mad Men
