The Best Shows This Week: Television + Deer Tick + Ducktails + Iron Chic + Hannibal Buress + The Hotelier + DJ Tanlines + Boys Noize + more goodness

December 19, 2014

Everyone knows the week of Christmas is always stocked with super solid shows. It’s almost like a festival type atmosphere. So many shows, so many people, so many choices. It can be super overwhelming. Thankfully, good old Oh My Rockness is here to help you sort through the madness.

Just kidding! It's pretty dead around here. But there are SOME good shows going on later in the week. Some. Not a ton. Just some. And good news: it only takes ONE good show to change your life.

I hope you remember that, man.

Monday - December 22nd, 2014 A.D.

Comic Wyatt Cenac does the weekly Littlefield gig tonight. Still not sure why you haven’t gone to this yet. I guess you’re waiting for him to be huge so you can spend more money to see him in a larger, less intimate space that pushes all the fun out of comedy. It’s cool. We all have our reasons for doing the things we do.

Electronic artist Ludwig Persik sings some of his synth pop booms at Cake Shop. This show is free. That means you don’t have to pay any money to go see it. Yes, Virginia, there is a Sant….. oh, nevermind.

Other notable shows = Hulu Plus + Amazon Prime + Netflix + Nintendo PlayBox 64 XL

Tuesday - December 23rd, 2014 A.D.

Richard Lloyd (he was in Television) and a bunch of other people are playing the “Exile on the Bowery Holiday Party” at The Bowery Electric. I’m not really sure what that means, I just know Richard Lloyd was in Television. BTW, “Marky Moon: Mark Whalberg covers Television.” Let’s make that happen.

*the following Richard Lloyd solo album is very good and extremely underrated - you should listen to it sometime - and I should mind my own business

Let’s see. What else is going on during this random 23rd day of December. Uhhhh…. let’s move on. The show selections for tomorrow will SURELY be better.

Other notable shows = I Lift My Eyes To The Light And Soar Towards The Distant Sun at The Emoville Horror + VWLSS CPS LCK FN at AEIOU + Orifice Consecration Decapitation at Saint Fight Us.

Wednesday - December 24th, 2014 A.D.

….well, this is awkward. I’m afraid I have absolutely nothing. There are no good shows tonight and I just can’t figure out why. But since we’re here and we have quite a few characters to spare we can use this space to talk about something else if you want? What are you interested in besides music? Are you much of a sportsman? Do you like high #fashion? Should we just move on? Alright, sir, we’re moving on.

Other notable shows = Washington Generals vs. Chicago Cardinals at PetCo Park + #fashion at #FashionTent

GEORGE: (warningly) Now get out of here, Bert, or I'll hit you again! Get out!

BERT: What the Sam Hill you yelling for, George?

GEORGE: Don't . . . George?

George touches Bert unbelievingly. George's mouth is bleeding again.

GEORGE: Bert, do you know me?

BERT: Know you? Are you kiddin'? I've been looking all over town trying to find you. I saw your car piled into that tree down there, and I thought maybe . . . Hey, your mouth's bleeding; are you sure you're all right?

GEORGE: What did you . . .

George touches his lips with his tongue, wipes his mouth with his hand, laughs happily. His rapture knows no bounds.

GEORGE: (cont'd) (joyously) My mouth's bleeding, Bert! My mouth's bleed . . . (feeling in watch pocket) Zuzu's petals! Zuzu's . . . they're . . . they're here, Bert! What do you know about that? Merry Christmas!

Now we’re talking. Enough with the games now. It’s time to stop fucking around. Because tonight is the night the good shows come back.

Let’s start with a good one at Glasslands. There are only a few shows left there and Ducktails + Julian Lynch + Family Portrait play that fine venue one last time. It totally sucks Scrooge McDuck bought their building.

Iron Chic open for I Am The Avalanche at Bowery Ballroom and it’s virtually impossible not to have a fun time at an Iron Chic show….. unless you don’t like anthemic punk rock that radiates good times, human connection, and joy.

Deer Tick and Jana Hunter (of Lower Dens) play Brooklyn Bowl. Deer Tick gonna be sick and look at me, Mom, I’ve got Rhyme Disease!

*when you get done marvelling at that excellent display of word swordsmanship please note that Deer Tick are playing a whole bunch of shows at Brooklyn Bowl for the remainder of this month #deertick #rhymedisease

Other notable shows = Psychic TV at Brooklyn Night Bazaar (free) + White Panda at Irving Plaza + Cyril Hahn at Output

Saturday - December 27th, 2014 A.D.

This night truly is a banger and I wouldn’t use a descriptive word popular circa 2007 like banger if I wasn’t serious.

The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer to Die (#humblebrag) + The Hotelier lead a good lineup at Bowery Ballroom. Expect to feel things at this one. I mean really feeeeel them, man. Get out of your head. Get into your heart. #emo #punk #pop #vape #Cuba #TheInterviewMovie #RIPMichaelJackson

DJ Tanlines (please pay no attention to that four year old band profile I just linked to) light up the decks at Brooklyn Bowl tonight. Dance off the post-holiday depression and choose to remain in the light.

A Sunny Day in Glasgow (that profile I just linked to is 7 years old) + Ava Luna (that one's only four) + Wins (Jason of Fang Island - that profile is also four years old) = a triple crown threat of potential pure pop hits at Rough Trade. Expect a 100% solid gold goddamn delight.

Gracefully aging emoting punkster vets The Jazz June play Saint Vitus with sublime indie popsters Field Mouse. This is recommended if you like seeing two good bands for the price of one. Also recommended if you like guitars. And melody. And finding free money on the street.

Other notable shows = Taking Back Sunday and The Menzingers at Starland Ballroom + Fiasco at Glasslands + DJ Chrome Sparks at Glasslands (late) + Psychic TV at Brooklyn Night Bazaar + Deer Tick at Brooklyn Bowl

Sunday - December 28th, 2014 A.D.

Television play Irving Plaza. Now, I just them saw them play a few months ago and let me tell you something - that Tom Verlaine guy can play his guitar a bit. You heard it here FIRST. I would definitely go see Television again and I definitely am. So look for me. I’ll be the guy wearing the Television shirt.

Hannibal Buress got tired of playing all those free shows at Knitting Factory every week so he decided to start making people pay for it. Good move. He’s one funny dude and worth every penny of the 25 dollars this show costs (however many pennies that comes out to)

Boys Noize drops the big time dance master jams at Output. I know the following song I’m about to post for you is a few years old but I also know that I don’t care. Humans pass. Jams do not.

Other notable shows = Taking Back Sunday and The Menzingers at Starland Ballroom (again) + Deer Tick at Brooklyn Bowl (again) + Bass Drum of Death and Mitski at Glasslands + LE1F at S.O.B.s

Thanks for reading again this week. Those who stuck around all the way to the end get a special treat. This good song. Happy Holidaze.
