((Xiu Xiu)) Band Profile and Upcoming New York City Concerts - Oh My Rockness

San Jose's Xiu Xiu is one weirdly wonderful band. I never thought I would compulsively listen to a ballad sung in Jamie Stewart's extreme warble with the lyrics "Cremate me after you cum on my lips." Stewart also sings about a deformed penis, a broken neck, and putting ashes in a vase. Xiu Xiu's mantra is that life is hard.

Their new album Fabulous Muscles was recorded amidst much strife -- friends of the band died and band members were arrested, had drug struggles, were clinically depressed, attempted suicide, committed suicide and got beaten up. Not exactly the feel-good band of the summer, but Xiu Xiu writes about what they know.

Extremely diverse, the band relies sometimes on house beats, simple acoustic guitars, and whatever seems to be lying around to create the emotional backdrop for Stewart's highly personal songs. Xiu Xiu aren't simply melancholy, they are heartbreaking.
