((The Veils)) Band Profile and Upcoming New York City Concerts - Oh My Rockness

New Zealand's The Veils are essentially a one man band with a revolving cast of collaborators. The man in question is Finn Andrews. Andrews belts out his tortured songs like a brooding troubadour.

The music is, in fact, upbeat for the most part (with even a few 50's chorus girl styled "oohs" and "ahhhs" thrown in the mix), but Andrews' often foreboding vibrato (an angrier Jeff Buckley?) and dark lyrical content (about devils, the apocalypse and such) gives off a vibe that definitely borders on gloomy and slightly pissed off. I guess that's why The Veils get a lot of those Birthday Party meets Joy Division comparisons. I hear a lot of later Tom Waits, too.

Andrews and crew have been praised for their passionate stage shows, and you're pretty much guaranteed to see some soul bearing. Finn Andrews lets it all hang out there. I guess that's the way they roll in New Zealand. Go see The Veils if you dare.
