Denmark's Mew make dramatic music. It's grand, it's theatrical, it's climactic and it's ultimately uplifting. And it's made by only three dudes! This is melodic pop music full of falsetto, soaring synths, and cathartic guitars. And somehow, it rocks out, too.
I've listened to their latest record, And the Glass-Handed Kites, when I've needed to feel that music can still be ambitious, can still take risks, and can still sound like there's a thoughtful process to making an album.
There's a twinge of darkness that hovers over these songs (they are from Scandinavia, after all), but to call it gloom-pop would be misleading. Don't think Joy Division or The Cure, think Amadeus hanging out at a carnival. |
